Mystery

Miracles (270 pages) is the second novel in John Vanek’s Father Jake Austin Mystery series. Father Jake Austin assumes multiple, often seemingly incompatible roles of physician, priest, healer and detective, and with each case, he hopes for miracles.

“Vanek brings G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown into the twenty-first century and sprinkles in hints of PBS’s Grantchester. You will not be disappointed.” — The Publish or Perish Writers

“The mystery is intriguing, with an edge of darkness that keeps things interesting. The main character, Jake, is delectably complicated and conflicted.” — InD’tale Magazine

“This mystery kept me guessing until the last clue had been discovered. John A. Vanek is definitely on my must-read list for anyone who enjoys the traditional mystery. I look forward to reading more about the life of Father Jake Austin.” — Reader Views

Jake must serve the young Catholic parents of a comatose infant while working with the local chief of police to investigate the possibility of SIDS. Meanwhile, the Bishop asks Jake to investigate the reports of a Virgin Mary statue that weeps blood. Jake is also a full-time uncle, as his half-sister terminally ill with leukemia is living with her son in the rectory. With each case, Jake hopes for miracles.

John A. Vanek received his bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University, his medical degree from the University of Rochester, did his internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic. His poetry has won contests and has been published in a variety of literary journals, anthologies, and magazines. John lives in Florida, where he teaches a poetry workshop for seniors.
